New York Detox and Rehabs For Drug and Alcohol Abuse

The state of New York, known mostly for New York City which sits within its borders, is recognized around the world. The state is packed full of historical monuments and significant places to visit. New York houses the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Twin Tower Monument and the theatrical giant copied all around the nation and abroad, Broadway. These factors and others are what makes New York one of the most visited locales in the world with an estimated 50 million visitors each year. However, the lights of Times Square aren’t enough to keep the darkness of drugs and alcohol from entering the borders of New York. Unfortunately, this state suffers from this just like the rest of the nation.

Substance Abuse in New York:

In 2007, there were 1,909 New York citizens who died as a direct result of drug use. This figures to 9.9 people per every 100,000, which is actually a little less than the national average, but still more than should be present. In fact, New York was one of the top ten states for drug use rates in many categories in 2008. The most commonly abused drugs in New York was heroin followed by marijuana and cocaine.

Other Behavioral Health Issues in New York:

In addition to drug abuse, New York has a significant problem with mental illness. The Department of Health in New York said the “Big Apple” would be better described as the “Big Blue Apple.” The reason behind this is a substantial rate of depression within the state. One in every five New York citizens has a mental health disorder with at least 8% suffering from depression. The report revealed the following:

“Major depressive disorder is the single greatest source of disability in NYC. At any given time over half a million adult New Yorkers are estimated to have depression.”

This report also showcases the effects mental health can have on other aspects of life, such as substance abuse. There is evidence to suggest a correlation between mental illness and substance abuse. They both need to be addressed to find healing in New York.
